Summary
“The Scorch Trials”, by James Dashner, is part of a series. The first book of the series is “The Maze Runner”. “The Scorch Trials” is definitely considered an action packed survival book. This book starts out with Thomas, Teresa, and the "Gladers". They are first rescued from The Glade by the "rescuers". The "rescuers" put them all into rooms. They are separated into a boy's room, and then a room just for Teresa. When all of the “Gladers” wake up, they find out that Teresa is now gone, and there is a new kid named Aris. Aris is from the other experiment of the maze, Group B. The “Gladers” find all of the “rescuers” dead, and they can see and hear all of the “cranks” outside. A man from WICKED then comes and says that they have started The Scorch Trials. They have to go 100 miles north of where they are now. There are no rules. One thing may break them. They have only two weeks to get to the safe haven. The “Gladers” encounter many obstacles, such as the “Cranks”, Group B, and even deadly traps. Group B is the girls group, which Teresa is now a part of. Aris was once in Group B. The “Gladers” have to make it through a blazing hot desert, through a city full of “Cranks”, and over a steep mountain, to make it to the safe haven. The “Gladers” come across a group of “Cranks” and bring a few with them, Brenda and Jorge, to help them out on their long journey. Thomas tells Brenda and Jorge that they might also receive the cure if they help them along the way. Brenda and Jorge are not full “Cranks” yet. Teresa breaks Thomas heart along the way by betraying him. She was told by WICKED to kill Thomas, and she is willing to do so. Thomas no longer has feelings for Teresa because of the betrayal. When they all reach the end of the Scorch Trials, Teresa tries to talk to Thomas through their heads. Thomas wants nothing to do with Teresa. In the end Teresa tells Thomas that WICKED is good.
